Yorkshire Carnegie press release

Former Leeds Tykes player Mark McMillan returned to Headingley Carnegie for Yorkshire Carnegie’s game against Romania last Friday, along with players from Abacus Kowloon RFC, where he is now Director of Rugby.

McMillan, who played for Leeds Tykes, between 2004 and 2006 and was part of the Powergen Cup Final wining squad, helped initiate the visit to Leeds after contacting Yorkshire Carnegie’s Business Development Manager John Bentley.

Bentley is the Ambassador for the Kowloon RugbyFest in Hong Kong, which is an annual tournament held in Hong Kong, which also raises money for a number of charities and the players who visited the UK were able to do so thanks to money raised from Rugby Fest in memory of Tony Ho, a promising young rugby player from Hong Kong who was tragically murdered three years ago whilst studying at Bradford University.

As a keen and talented rugby player, volunteer coach and enthusiastic supporter of the game, Tony's easy-going, polite and fun personality made a great impression with everyone who met him and following this tragic death the Tony Ho Scholarship was developed.  This Scholarship sees 16 local rugby players from a variety of backgrounds travel to Mount St Mary’s College in Sheffield to go on a summer camp with the Natal Sharks Academy coaches who will be over at the same time.

Speaking about the trip to the UK, McMillan said: “The players who attended the camp are aged between 14 and 18 and would not have otherwise been able to afford such a trip. By doing this we not only giving back to the local rugby community in Kowloon but also giving some of the next generation on Hong Kong internationals an experience they won't forget."

“It was great to be able to bring the players to Headingley Carnegie and see Yorkshire Carnegie in action.  I have fond memories of my time at the club and it was nice to catch up with some familiar faces such as John Bentley who helped organise the visit to Leeds. He took the players on the tour of the facilities and they got access to the dressing room which was all set up for the Leeds Rhinos game against Wigan and then we got chance to watch the Carnegie game.  It was a fantastic trip and one which I hope we will be able to do again in the future.”
